I've caught a few, nothing to brag about, but I have been having more fun getting friends and family on fish.
I've also been wrapping sticks in my spare time.
Did this one for the Texas Custom Rod Builders Show that was near Houston on the 17th & 18th of February.
I sent it down to be part of a donation to wounded servicemembers.
I think it turned out alright. It's a nice blank at least. The Batson SB822.5 is practically a legend in the rod-building community.
I also have been restoring rods guys bring in to me.
This old St. Croix came in and was really beat up.
The customer wanted it to be fish-able. It was his Dad's pride and joy, and after his passing it just sat in storage.
His Dad would be upset if he just hung it on the wall or left it to rot, so he asked me to do my best.
The sun had taken it's toll, but with some hard work... I made it shine again.
The rear grip was solid Wisconsin Red Oak and took 6 coats of Varathane to get back close to it's natural beauty. That dry wood soaked up that finish like a sponge.
So, that about does it for 2012... at least fishing-wise.

My on the water shots are done with an Olympus Stylus Tough 10 MP, the custom rod shots I take with the DSLR, Canon Rebel Powershot S5.
Couple more I finished up this weekend:
4 Wt. 4 piece fly rods for creeks and small streams.

I don't even blog anymore. I been so damn busy building rods & fishing that I just don't have time for it anymore.
I'll be fishing tomorrow night out of the port of Milwaukee, launch about 6pm, fish till limits. The salmon up here (Kings) are voracious night feeders. They move up real shallow when we get consecutive days of hard W or SW winds that blow the top warm water out and well up the cold deep water along the Western shores. Right now there is bait (alewives & smelt) stacked up in the gaps between the harbor and main lake and folks casting spoons and jigs from shore are pounding some nice fish through the night. We'll be casting from a boat with 8'6" salmon/steelhead sticks, throwing 3/4oz spoons or 3/8oz darterheads rigged with Gulp Jerk shads.
Couple guys I know were out last night and picked up 6 fish, one was over 20lbs. One of the guys got spooled on heavy gear and 20lb braid! There are some 30lb class fish around, lots of 28s and 29s caught last week offshore.
All of the salmon I have caught this year came trolling the main lake. It'll be nice to feel the fish hit and enjoy the drag smoking runs tomorrow. I'll try to get some video, you'll like it Bob, reminds me of yellowtail fishing!
