So the white bass here in Texas are starting to chase the shad in open water. They push the baitballs to the surface for a few minutes then go down, after a few minutes they get the bait balled up again and they pop up in a different spot.. I love this type of fishing, the Run N Gun and casting at boiling schools of fish is fast paced and, super exciting, and visceral...
To maximize my catch when the fish pop up I'm using a "Jig and Fly" rig. This set up is just a fly that looks minnowish tied a foot to foot and a half above your lure of choice.
A "Jig Fly" does not need to be all fancy and beautiful like something you would drop in front of a trout.. they are a reaction lure. When fish are schooling and smashing through a baitball they are not being choosy as to what they put in their mouths.
Here are some Jig Flies I put together today.. Size 6 hook, white duck feather, yellow rubber skirt from a spinnerbait, and of course the black is from crow feathers...

Splash, you are special. You make your lures and my simple mind has to buy them. Your white Bass sound like our Speckled Trout. They school up and chase bait in shallow water. Last week I got into a school of Trout and caught 40. We can only keep 6 this year and they have to be 14" long. Went back yesterday to the same spot and caught 22. I brought home 6 18 inchers. Guess what we had for dinner?
Aaaah, man I just have too much crap.. so I already had all the parts... I used 2# mono to wrap the feather together then covered it with CA glue.. you can pull apart rope and fluff it up to do the same thing..
I love chasing fish, I use to work on the open party fishing boats out of San Diego 5 days a week and on the tuna boats we went out for 3 days at a time.. we would chase around Yellow Tail Jacks, West Coast Barracuda, Tuna, Dorado..and inshore calico and sand bass... man the stories I could tell you... I have seen and experienced so much cool stuff during that time of my life..it was an amazing adventure..
I have the lure sickness.... when I see a lure that speaks to me.. I. HAVE. TO. BUY. IT. I have about 50 pounds of plastic lures (most are un-opened)... and your speck. post reminded me I have a bunch of scampi, and shrimp shaped plastics I'm not going to use out here.. would you use something like that to fish the back water? If so I would be happy to dump them on ya...
I've got the salmon bug and have been tying my own trolling flies here for kings and coho. I should put some pics up...

I have narrowed down my choices of baits for specs and flounders. The gulp plastic 3" white shrimp is my number one bait. Like you I have a ton of plastics. The newest one that seems to be very hot for the specs is the Zoom Super Spook Jr. in rainbow trout color. Thanks for the offer. I love to explore what other people use to catch fish with. Send me what you think are the best color and sizes if you want to dump some. Tell me what you would sell them for and I will send you a check.

OOh yeah Gulp is hard to get away from.. I call it fish crack... Special Ed and I have also used the stuff to peirce the lip of many a fish in Southern Cali.
If you are willing to use the plastics that's all the payment I want... they are just going to turn back into oil at my place.. I will send you a few... if you like em I'll send you the rest...
We use the 5" Gulp! Jerk Shad in white or glow/white chartreuse pegged to a 1/4oz darter head to jig for salmon in the breakwall gaps at the Port of Milwaukee in the summer.
Planning a trip for just that type of fishing as I type, Thursday night launch fish all night. As a bonus, Foo Fighters will be playing the Ampitheater right there on the water in Milwaukee Thursday night so we should have some good background music...
