Sorry to wake you..but.

I took a trip to a spot I hunt early in the season.. the weather report was calling for 20+ mph wind since this was more of an exploratory hunt I was ok with the wind.. a short while after setting up I checked a nearby weather station and it was reporting sustained winds of 30mph...GREAT!.. I hunted crows for about 2 hours.. called in 4. shot 3, recovered 2... the unrecovered bird was hit at such a great distance I heard my shot string pelt it's wings and body... it sailed off down wind then crashed a few hundred yards down range..

Since nothing was flying and windy days are great for creeping around in the woods I went back to the "War Wagon" and traded in my SBE II for my Remington 870 slug gun and my Remington Fieldmaster .22.. I then walked toward the biggest tree along the field's windbreak in hopes of finding a "raccoon" tree... As I approached the tree I started looking for signs of a raccoon... scanning the trunk I looked up along the huge branches and what do I see... a chunk of gray fur the size of a basket ball... I didn't even have to break out the caller... right before my eyes were two big FAT raccoons sleeping in the open about 20 feet over my head.. as I circled the tree looking for a head shot (very little of either racoon's head or vitals was exposed) I come eye to eye with one of them... WHAT this thing is awake... Sorry buddy.. time for a sleeping pill.. I took aim and planted one on its forhead... but the damn thing scrambled and disappeared .. they must have been sleeping just outside a hole due to the unseasonably hot weather.. I quickly target the second and land neck shot which sends the raccoon further out along the branch... in full view, with a chest shot it was quickly on the ground.

Who says you need a .22mag to hunt raccoons, I took this beast with only 2 CBee's.

CBee22.ashx

Check out how this coon only has half a tail....

nice 'mixed bag' Splash, so you can call those coons in daylight ok, is that the usual way of shooting coons by calling them in, or do you hunt them with hounds as well, sorry if they seem stupid questions but i love to know how other people go about hunting there animals, we go out lamping for foxs at night and when we spot the 'eyes' in the lamp we then try to call them in closer to get a better shot, but no way do you see them out much in daytime around here.

You absolutely can call them during the day.. raccoons are very territorial and respond well to being called to. From what my limited experience has taught me..when calling them with a "fighting coon" sound they are coming to either break up the fight, or join in. There are several "calling coon" videos on youtube... the one shown below is one I took out behind the house..

Word on the street is you NEED  a decoy... I'm not so sure you do.. but I do know they key in on a decoy VERY well. In the video I am using a "Quiver Critter" and my FOXPRO Fury is on my folding hunting chair. I shot this video standing in plain sight wearing a brown T-shirt and light tan shorts.. you will notice the raccoon only freaks after it is right by the decoy..

I now use a Mojo "Critter" to hunt raccoons..not sure it's any better than the "Quiver Critter" just different.

Cool, have not seen that done before. Are coon calls on the foxpro? Never played with it to see what is on it. Have been stuck on crows to long.

I don't know.. I'm not sure if there is a "standard load" for foxpro eCalls.. mine was purchased from allpredatorcalls.com and I was redirected to the foxpro site to choose which sounds I wanted.. if you don't have them they can be purchased directly from the foxpro website. There are a few other places to get free raccoon sounds.. most of which are listed in the "Link Dump" on the home page under "Predator".
