Last hunt of the fall season
Permalink

Ran one last hunt yesterday after running into a big bunch of crows during our early deer season here in Michigan.  Didn't do as well as we hoped but it was a lot of fun and we learned a few things as always.  We had a couple times I should have done better but I had a melt down at one point.  I had a couple floaters picked out to kill til the sky turned black to the right of me and I lost it like a kid in a candy store and missed both birds.  Then I was swinging on a bird in a feeding set up when my swing got interrupted by a branch and all i did was remove his tail feathers instead of dump him.

Killed this bird by shooting through a apple tree.

Our "Feeding Setup", even country birds know what McDonalds is.  wink

Making use of the dead.

never tried a 'feeding set up', had a little luck with a stuffed fox placed in the decoys, and never got one crow to come in to a owl decoy, shame you only got the one, but that crow looks a hell of a size you shot!!!! dont know if the crows you shoot are bigger than the carrion crows we have in the UK.

I like the Mickey D look. Another cool setup you need to try is using one of your dead deer carcasses or even a road kill. They love dead stuff. Pour ketchup on the hide for a realalistic look.

Gary, we were talking about that the other day while we were hunting. I think we're going to save a hide from one of our deer this year so we don't have to haul a whole carcass out to the field. A deer hide and red food coloring should make a tempting buffet in the deep snow come winter.

Ketchup and chocolate powder mixed makes for nice dried blood. Also less messy when dry!

One is better then none, and in my opinion...as long as you had fun..the trip was well worth the time.

Many years ago I use to carry around the pelt of a cottontail I shot during rabbit season.. along with the dried blood, a little red spray paint on the edges of the pelt made for a great dead animal decoy. I also put a slit in the mouth of two of my crow decoys and put the pelt in their mouths to make it look like they were fighting over the carcass.. worked really well.. but I eventually lost the pelt and never replaced it..

Keep me posted how well it works!  If we had snow I would try it for sure.  Good luck.
