If I could have one shotgun it would be a 12 gauge. The action type is personal preference, I like semi-auto. As far as barrel length, I prefer 26inch because is a longer sight plain, without extra combursome length. Choke is also personal preference. Most newer guns have choke tubes so you can change chokes for the situation. Buy the best gun you can afford. If cost is to be kept low, I would talk to your local gun dealer and pick one that fits you.

If I could only have one shotgun I'd get a 2nd job

26 inch tubes on a repeater provide about the same length of sighting plane as 28" tubes on break action guns.
